We provide assistance with car registration, tax and ITV issues on the Costa del Sol.

Whether you own a car, are about to buy or sell one, you need to be aware of the correct procedure and paperwork required.

Road/Vehicle Tax
Road tax is payable for every registered car and can be paid in your local town hall, tax office or through some banks. Please be aware that your local government will not send you a payment reminder and the responsibility is with the car owner.
The amount to be paid depends on where you live (each municipality has its own rate) and the “fiscal horsepower” of your car. It is important to check this bill to ensure the correct formula has been used to prevent overpayment.

Transfer Ownership
Buying or selling a second hand car in Spain requires that all paperwork and taxes are fully paid and up to date. Furthermore, potential buyers should also check the originals of the owners Permiso de Circulación and the date of the last ITV.
For cars on the Costa del Sol, transfer of ownership of the car registration must be done in the offices of the Jefatura De Tráfico in Malaga.

Car registration in Spain/Importing a car into Spain
We provide a full service to get your car legally registered on Spanish registration plates. Heavy penalties are expected if you have your car on foreign registration in Spain for longer than 6 months. Avoid these penalties and leave it with us, we do the entire process, all the paperwork, engineers reports, mechanics and taxes. We can also help with cars being imported from outside the EU.

ITV collect and return service
Every car registered in Spain must pass the ITV (Inspecion Tecnica de Vehículos) roadworthiness test. The frequency of the test will depend on the age of the car:

  • Cars up to 4 years old do not require a test.
  • Cars between 4 and 10 years old must pass the ITV every 2 years.
  • Cars over 10 years old must be pass the ITV every year.

  • There are two centers on the Costa del Sol – Estepona and Málaga.

The car will have to be taken to the testing center where your paperwork will be presented to the office along with the test fee. Your car registration number and inspection line number will be called out via loudspeaker.

The inspector will tell you where to drive and ask you to perform various tasks during the test, brakes, clutch, handbrake, lights, windshield wipers etc. The emissions from the car will also be checked. Once the test is finished, you will have to wait until the inspector has finished his report and informs you if the car has passed or not.

If your car fails the ITV, there is a maximum of 2 months to make the necessary repairs to ensure it passes the test again.
